12 Van Life Books that are Van Lifer Approved

December 31, 2020
Traveler reading book in tent

Power up your nomad knowledge with these stellar van life books. Yeah, there are plenty of web resources to learn about living the van life, but nothing beats curling up with a book and making big (very big) plans.

As a real-time van lifer, below are my recommended in-print resources for books on van life. Besides brief descriptions of each book, I have included 2-3 word breakdowns of each book’s use, ratings, and price ranges. I have also divided the books into four sections: general van life books, van build/conversion books, cookbooks, and road trip books for when you hit the road.

P.S. Looking for web content on living in a van? Head over to my article talking about van life culture to get the deets.

Why Bookshop over Amazon? Bookshop is an online bookstore that aims to support small bookshops around the world. 75% of their profit is donated to local bookshops and they have donated over $10,500,000 to small bookshops to date. Amazon, on the other hand, has forced many small bookstores to close because they cannot compete with the massive company, they are a major contributor to global carbon emissions, and they underpay their employees.

I had to include this book first. There isn’t another van life book that compares to the one-of-a-kind photographs and inspirational stories in this book. You know National Geographic is the pro of serving up inspiration and stunning photography. And that’s what this book is. Each of the 500 drives described in this book come with jaw-dropping photos, maps of the trip, and even some adventuring tips. Wherever in the world you are van living, you need the inspiration of this book. If you want details to plan one of these trips, however, they are unfortunately not included in this book, so you’ll need to do your own research there.

12. The Most Scenic Drives in America

Editors of Reader’s Digest
The Most Scenic Drives in America cover

Used for: Road trip planning
Price range: $$
Star review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is the master book of road trip planning in the United States. The Most Scenic Drives in America lists 120 road trips throughout the country. No matter where you are or how much time you have, you can find a road trip in this book. Each trip includes detailed descriptions of every stop along the way, a map, and trip planning tips including when to go, how long it’ll take, advice, and information on public lands. The only information it doesn’t include is free parking and campgrounds along the route. For that, I recommend iOverlander, the Dyrt, and the Vanlife App. (PS, the photos are stunning, too).

CONCLUSION

With van living becoming more and more mainstream, resources are starting to flood the market. These include the fabulous books above. Books give you a different perspective than YouTube videos or blog posts. They are more inspirational and often include more information packed into one place than other resources.

To me, van living is about returning to a more connected way of living. With the best van life books in hand, they will help connect you to the van life and disconnect from devices–they are perfect resources for a night under the stars.
